Professional Experience
1996-Present: President and clinician, MasterCare Institute, Petoskey, MI. Provide full range of psychological services:
Conduct individual and marital psychotherapies, with special focus on the effects of psychological trauma and chronic stress on personal relationships; direct 911 Training Institute, a division of MasterCare Institute dedicated to developing and conducting training, presentations and policy for 911 Public Service Answering Points in North America, focusing on improving the personal mental health of 911 dispatchers through education on traumatic stress/stress reduction, and on equipping them with skills in management of suicide calls. Current and recent professional activities include:
- Developing curricula for/delivering 911 training (also conducted in the capacity of Course Instructor, Oakland Community College, Auburn Hills, MI. 2005 - present)
- Delivering presentations and training at regional, state, and national levels for medical, mental health, and pastoral professionals
- Providing community presentations to the public on a variety of mental health topics
- Developing curricula and conducting ongoing stress reduction group psychotherapy process for individuals with stress-related medical illnesses (by physician and self-referrals)
- Serving as psychological consultant to corporate CEO and board members/owners addressing interpersonal conflicts in pursuit of renewed and vital relationships, embracing of shared values and templating future planning assuring corporate fiscal viability
- Mental health consultant to regional print and broadcast media; created, wrote, and co-hosted weekly talk radio program, Straight From the Heart (120 one-hour episodes) offering mental health perspectives on personal, family, business, and community health issues
1991-1996: Staff Psychologist, Department of Psychiatry, Burns Clinic Medical Center, Petoskey, MI: Provided outpatient psychological services including adult individual and couples therapy, and clinical psychological testing in collaboration with staff psychiatrists to assist in diagnosis and treatment of a full range of psychiatric disorders
1987-1991: Staff Psychologist, Woodland Counseling Center/Northern Michigan Hospitals, Inc., Petoskey, MI: Conducted all in-patient psychological assessments as contractual psychologist for Northern Michigan Hospital Center for Psychiatric Medicine. Provided outpatient psychotherapy to adult and child populations.
1983-1985/1979-1980: Michigan Headstart Handicap Services Advocate/Specialist, Greenville, MI, by grant from Administration of Children, Youth, and Families/Department of Health and Human Services (ACYF), Region V (Chicago). Served as ACYF’s Michigan advocate for impaired children in the state’s Headstart programs, assuring cooperation of state governmental agencies (departments of public health, mental health, education, and social services. Advanced policies and operational processes assuring services for preschool-age children with special needs; conducted continuing education training conferences for Michigan’s public early childhood educators
1981-1982: Sales and Marketing Representative, Michigan Press Association.
1978-1979: President, Student Government, Central Michigan University. Elected (with stipend) as student representative to the university Board of Trustees; established department of Ethnic Minority Relations; conducted research study on efficacy of university medical services. Administered six executive departments and chaired student government Board of Directors.
