Get involved with NENA! The National Emergency Number Association

Years ago I learned from my sister, Deborah Achtenberg, ENP that achieving excellence as an emergency communications professional depends in part on your membership in the National Emergency Number Association (NENA). She urged me as a 911 educator to join, and I'm glad she did.

By participating in NENA you will gain great exposure to outstanding education at their annual state and national conferences, have the opportunity to learn about and contribute to creating the standards that assure Best Practice in your profession, and much more.

The 2010 National NENA Conference held in June in Indianapolis was a great example of what you can expect.to experience. This was an exceptionally well run event, with outstanding speakers and programs shedding light on what's to come with NG911, the future of financing 911, and many other critically important topics. And for me, the conference provided a tremendous opportunity to network with frontline dispatchers, PSAP leaders and NENA leadership in the pursuit of a NENA campaign to education North America's 911 professionals about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (You'll hear more about this in the months to come!)

As a member of NENA I have been grateful for the chance to learn from, and share knowledge with so many others who share my passion for promoting excellence in 911 telecommunication. If you're ready to give a little to your profession and gain a lot in return, give serious consideration to joining today. Visit the NENA website now.

If you are already a member and have a 911 cause you believe in enough to volunteer time for, contact NENA and let the staff know. I can now say from personal experience: they are ready to listen and grateful for your support. According to our new NENA President, Steve O'Conor, volunteering will be an essential element in the association's success in the year to come.
