MANAGEMENT & RESILIENCE INSTRUCTOR AND CONSULTANT
Jim Lanier is a Management & Resilience Instructor and Consultant with expertise in management practices for leaders in the 9-1-1 and EMS industries. He delivers training and provides consultation to help command staff and executive leaders optimize operations in the communications center.
Jim started his public-safety career in 1984 as a volunteer firefighter at the Oldsmar Fire Department (FL). Soon afterwards, he acquired his Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and completed the Florida Fire Standards requirements for Fire Fighter certification. After four years as a volunteer and a brief stint as a paid firefighter, Jim began the next phase of his career with Sunstar Ambulance Service in Pinellas County, FL.
Jim had a variety of career experiences during his 18 years of service at Sunstar. He completed his paramedic certification and worked as a field clinician on the Critical Care Transport unit, and served as a Supervisor. He also became qualified to work within the Communications Center as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD). Jim attained the position of Communications Training Officer and led a successful project for Sunstar to be named an Accredited Center of Excellence (ACE) through the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED). He promoted to become the Assistant Director, and ultimately the Director of the Sunstar Communications Center. In addition to Sunstar, Jim also worked as a flight paramedic for an air ambulance service and as an Emergency Room Paramedic for a Level II Trauma Center.
After leaving Sunstar Ambulance Service, Jim remained in the 9-1-1 communications and public-safety support environment. He worked mid-level and executive leadership positions, which included Communications Division Chief, 9-1-1 Coordinator, and Division Commander.
Between 1999-2002, Jim obtained EMD, EFD, and Quality Assurance Instructor certifications through the IAED and he continues to instruct those courses today and review IAED accreditation applications. In 2011, Jim co-founded the 911 Wellness Foundation with Jim Marshall to promote advocacy, wellness, and resilience within the public-safety telecommunications profession.
Jim holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a focus in Emergency Management from Jacksonville State University (AL). He is a member of the IAED College of Fellows and the Board of Accreditation. He has been certified as an Emergency Number Professional (ENP) through the National Emergency Number Association (NENA) since 2008 and is also a member of the OnStar Public Safety Advisory Council. Jim actively participates at industry events such as APCO, NENA and the IAED Navigator Conferences where he is often a featured presenter.
