Jim had a variety of career experiences during his 18 years of service at Sunstar. He completed his paramedic certification and worked as a field clinician on the Critical Care Transport unit, and served as a Supervisor. He also became qualified to work within the Communications Center as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD). Jim attained the position of Communications Training Officer and led a successful project for Sunstar to be named an Accredited Center of Excellence (ACE) through the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED). He promoted to become the Assistant Director, and ultimately the Director of the Sunstar Communications Center. In addition to Sunstar, Jim also worked as a flight paramedic for an air ambulance service and as an Emergency Room Paramedic for a Level II Trauma Center.
After leaving Sunstar Ambulance Service, Jim remained in the 9-1-1 communications and public-safety support environment. He worked mid-level and executive leadership positions, which included Communications Division Chief, 9-1-1 Coordinator, and Division Commander.
Between 1999-2002, Jim obtained EMD, EFD, and Quality Assurance Instructor certifications through the IAED and he continues to instruct those courses today and review IAED accreditation applications. In 2011, Jim co-founded the 911 Wellness Foundation with Jim Marshall to promote advocacy, wellness, and resilience within the public-safety telecommunications profession.
Jim holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a focus in Emergency Management from Jacksonville State University (AL).
